The fate of Joe Gow’s tenure at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse is in the hands of a committee, months after he was fired as chancellor essentially for producing pornographic videos with his wife and affiliating with adult film starts.

A two-day hearing at the OmniCenter wrapped up Thursday.

Gow argued that the faculty senate committee has “not proved just cause” to end his tenure. He denies that his actions caused harm to the college.

A committee spokesman said Gow “doesn’t get it,” and declared that it’s time for his relationship with UW-L to end.

Gow came to the La Crosse campus as chancellor in 2007.

A brief testimony by interim UW-L chancellor Betsy Morgan wrapped up the hearing.

Gow was removed as chancellor last December. He faces the possible loss of his tenure for allegedly refusing to cooperate with the university investigation of the videos and his use of university computers.

A decision is likely to be made in writing and will be released publicly, after it is presented to university officials.

Don’t strain your brains over this. Of course Gow the plow did irreparable harm to UWL. He should be stripped of his tenure and sent packing.

The deciders seem to be having difficulty deciding. Perhaps they’re worried about the potential lawsuit for a wrongful termination of a fully tenured professor. I don’t agree with Joe Gow’s poor judgement, but freedom, liberty, and the free market must prevail. That is, if you don’t like Joe Gow, don’t take his classes. And if no one signs up for his classes, he will be gone and the UW system will avoid a costly lawsuit. And if people continue to take his classes, then I guess his teaching is better than we thought.
