MADISON, Wis. (AP) Wisconsin is expected to get less federal money this year to help pay for the heating bills of low income residents.

The Wisconsin Department of Administration says the average heating benefit this season is expected to be $227. That compares with $337 last season.

The heating assistance is available now through May 15. Eligibility is based on household income, household size and the home’s heating cost. A family of four must earn less than $47,485 to qualify. An individual can earn no more than $24,692.

The state estimates that about 215,000 people will qualify.

Applications can be made through county social service offices, tribal governments, and private nonprofit agencies.
