Local Control Bill Could Impact Water Quality
In Madison, they call it a mining regulation bill. But it’s more than that for those in La Crosse city hall worried about a lack of local control. The senate bill that would limit local regulations for mining operations also would prevent locals from enacting water quality regulations. In other words, the same water standards adopted for the state as a whole by the DNR, would also have to be good enough for every municipality around the state. So, La Crosse’s water would be held to the same standards as, say, Milwaukee’s. The city also worries that the proposed legislation would add restrictions for how the city deals with floodwaters.
