La Crosse police haven’t had their license plate reader for very long, but they may have to curtail how they use it already.  La Crosse cops use the very expensive reader to constantly scan license plates.  We’re told the idea is to turn up possible stolen cars or get clues to other possible crimes.  But new legislation in Madison would put new limits on that practice and only allow police to use the readers during active criminal investigations.  La Crosse police say they’re still trying to determine the full impact of the proposed legislation on their use of the reader.
