Drive Begins to Honor Park’s Namesake With Statue

Memories are fading a little.  And a guy called “Babe” isn’t a household name like he once was in La Crosse.  And that’s what’s behind a drive to put a statue of Walter “Babe” Weigent in the park that bears his name.  The same park where the old Central High stood.  Where Weigent spent most of his 37 years as a teacher, coach and athletic director

Carl Miller, who played football for Weigent and later coached the Central team.  He’s leading the alumni effort to raise enough money to put a bronze statue of Weigent in the park.
