Solid Waste Burning Right Along
If you were asked to name one area where La Crosse County is way ahead of the
rest of America…would you guess, garbage disposal? The county’s head of solid waste, Hank Koch (cook), is amazed that other major countries have embraced converting waste to energy to an extent that the U-S has not:
The Xcel incinerator on French Island has used trash as fuel to make electricity for nearly 30 years. Koch thinks Americans are reluctant to try waste-to-energy because incinerating garbage had bad effects in the 60’s and 70’s.
