Police Attacker Needs Another Mental Exam Before Release Hearing
Joseph Smith will get yet another exam before his next competency hearing in La Crosse County Court…
Judge Dale Pasell is asking for two doctors to examine Smith, to see if he’s competent to ask for a release from the Mendota institute. The next hearing is set for March 19th. Smith was found not guilty due to mental illness, after stabbing and wounding a La Crosse policeman during a traffic stop eight years ago. He spent four years at Mendota before being released briefly, but was re-committed when his mental condition became worse.
