La Crosse Woman Targeted in Tax Fraud
A La Crosse woman is one of many to get caught up in a nationwide surge of tax filing fraud. Police say the woman went to file her taxes at a preparation place in La Crosse and couldn’t. The IRS says her social security number has already been used to file for a tax return. The IRS has put a hold on her return and has opened an investigation. So far, no suspects. The feds have recently started to crack down on what has been an increasing problem of filing fake tax returns using stolen identities. Last year, feds charged nearly 900 people on charges stemming from tax-related identity theft.
