Convicted Cop Attacker Withdraws Request To Be Freed

The Holmen man who’s hospitalized for attacking a La Crosse cop has withdrawn his latest request to be released…

In a brief telephone conference with Judge Dale Pasell, Joseph Smith said he freely made the decision not to ask for release at this time. Eight years ago this week, Smith was charged with stabbing and wounding Officer Jon Wenger with a screwdriver. Smith has been committed to a state hospital for most of the time since then, aside from a brief release in 2010.
