Ophelia House Under The Gun
They’ve had random police stops, and some drug searches by dogs, at an
alternative facility for women run by La Crosse County. But the county continues to look at changes which might be needed at Ophelia’s House. Jane Klekamp from the county justice service office says women who are arrested often go to alternative places like Ophelia’s because they’re usually less dangerous than men:
The average age of a woman sent to Ophelia’s House is about 30, and she’ll stay there for close to two months. Two severe drug overdoses this year have led to greater scrutiny of what happens at the house.
