Hankel Finally Ready For Sentencing In Barre Mills Drug Death

He was supposed to be sentenced back in April, but psychiatric problems have delayed the penalty phase of the Malachi Hankel case…

Now, however, a doctor finds that Hankel is competent to be sentenced for the reckless homicide of a Barre Mills man, Tom Tremain.  Hankel pled guilty in February, and the sentencing is now set for July 16th.  Tremain had run away from a Madison hospital where he was supposed to get treatment for his drinking, and persuaded Hankel to drive him back to La Crosse County.  Hankel admits to selling him heroin.  Tremain’s death was blamed on a mixture of drugs and alcohol.
