Barges Going No Where For Awhile
At least nine towboats are tied up north of Wabasha, and more are stuck near
Winona. They’re not able to tow their barges south because sandbars block their path. Army Corps of Engineers Lockmaster, Gordon Holman, in Alma says the situation won’t get better for at least a week.
Dredging is the solution to the problem, but it could be almost a week before these barges are up and moving again. It’s racking up the bills as companies pay workers stranded thousands of miles from home, while folks on the other end of the river wait for their cargo.
