Eco Park Changing Hands This Week
La Crosse will take over the Myrick Hixon Eco Park starting tomorrow. The city council votes on an agreement tonight that makes it official. The Eco-Park’s board made the decision to give up the facilities late last month. Now the city inherits the whole thing: the building, barn, chairs. All of it. Mayor Tim Kabat says figuring out what to do with the place in the long term will take some planning
Over the years, the Eco-Park went from an indigenous animal, environmental learning sanctuary, to a controversial fundraising failure with a plan to charge high admission prices to play on so-called environmental playscapes. Just one of those playscapes was ever built and insurance problems kept it from ever being used. Part of the termination agreement requires that structure get removed.
