Study; Assessments Can Vary Widely Across State

You pay property taxes on your home based on what the assessor says it’s worth.  Turns out, that can be a subjective measurement.  A new study finds that assessment can take wide swings from market value depending on where you live.  Some assessors stick real close to what the market says it’s worth.   Others are way off.  The state apparently finds La Crosse assessments to be some of the most distant from market values among larger cities.  But the state says homeowners in La Crosse are getting under-assessed by about seven percent.   Nearly every other community in La Crosse county is also being under-assessed.
