Ferguson Discussed At UW-L
Could the race-related violence that’s happened in Ferguson, Missouri occur
in La Crosse, Wisconsin? Speakers at a U-W-La Crosse forum last night suggested that the social climate for non-white people in this community is not very positive. Sociology professor Laurie Cooper Stoll reported results of a campus survey on the differences between white and ethnic students at the college:
U-W-L graduate Stan Davis is African-American, and worked in the state justice department and for former Governor Jim Doyle. Davis says even though he’s an attorney and wears a suit to work, he says white people still get nervous around him:
Davis believes the grand jury in the Ferguson case did its job properly, but the prosecutors unfairly influenced the process so a white police officer would not be charged with Michael Brown’s death.
