Franciscan Nuns In La Crosse Pleased With Vatican Study Of Church Women
The 1960’s was a popular time to be a nun in America…
It was the decade of ‘The Sound of Music,’ the Singing Nun, and ‘The Flying Nun.’ The Catholic Church in the U-S had twice as many sisters in the 60’s as there are today…and the average American nun in 2014 probably became a nun during the 1960’s. A new Vatican report on Catholic women is distressed by the older and dwindling number of nuns in the U-S…but it also says positive things about how the sisters serve the church.
Sister Karen Lueck (leek) is president of the Franciscan Sisters in La Crosse. She says the F-S-P-A was not as worried as other Catholics were about the study…dreading that the church would criticize American nuns for being too political.
