La Crosse Still Short On Parking

There’s a perception that no matter how many parking ramps are built in downtown La Crosse, there never seems to be enough parking space available.

An update of a parking study done five years ago appears to confirm that perception.  The city parking utility board has been told that downtown is about 300 spaces short of existing demand…and the shortfall could grow to 17-hundred in another five years.  But building another ramp to meet that demand doesn’t seem to be the answer…if you ask public works director Dale Hexom:

A rough cost estimate for such a large ramp would be about 30-million dollars.  It would be twice the capacity of the La Crosse Center ramp on Jay Street.  There’s concern that putting new buildings on the courthouse parking lot would increase the shortfall in spaces.
