King Program Packs Em In

La Crosse’s yearly celebration of the Martin Luther King holiday brought a

capacity crowd to a Viterbo theater Monday night…to hear familiar names, and familiar voices:

WIZM’s Dick Record narrated a short film about Sister Thea Bowman, who taught at Viterbo and became famous nationwide as a civil rights activist.  The main speaker for the evening was Ruby Bridges, who broke a color barrier at a New Orleans school as a first-grader. Bridges spoke of being the first black child at the William Frantz school, where she was taught separately from the white kids, and they told her they weren’t allowed to play with her.
