Phone Scams Lead Surge in Consumer Complaints for 2014
Final numbers in for complaints lodged with the office of consumer protection in Madison for last year. Landlord and tenant disputes always are huge in the state and grew by a big number last year. But the biggest surge in complaints, says consumer protection chief, Sandy Chalmers, is from phone scams. Especially the IRS agent impostor scams. The caller tells you to give up cash or they’re coming for you. Never believe it, says Chalmers
Not surprisingly, says Chalmers, a scammer saying he’s from the IRS always adds a little more urgency to the fraudulent phone call, making those calls frequently successful.
