Is Wisconsin Losing Dairy Luster?
Wisconsin takes the label of the dairy state very seriously. But not many dairy farms are actually left in the state. A new report says, for the first time in memory, the number of dairy farm operations has dipped to below ten thousand. Still a pretty sizable number but nowhere close to the 143 thousand farms recorded in 1950. Despite the smaller number of herds, the state counted 1.27 million head of milking cows last year, which is an all-time high. The state also produced a record 28 billion pounds of milk.
