The Baseball Team That Almost Wasn’t
Back in 2009, the baseball program at UW-L was this close to being cut due to
budget issue. So what saved baseball at UW-La Crosse? A few things, actually. For starters, almost the entire team decided to remain on campus and fight to keep the sport alive at UW-L. And then, a breakthrough came when an anonymous donor pledged a six-figure contribution in April 2010. The program was on solid footing for at least the next five years. And now, the team is in it’s first ever college world series.
A remarkable turn of events says Chancellor Joe Gow….the man whose decision could have spelled the fate of the program.
In 2012, UW-La Crosse joined forces with the La Crosse Loggers. The partnership gives around $40 thousand a year from the Loggers to the UW-L baseball program. The program is helping the Loggers fund raise $650 thousand in proposed improvements to Copeland Park. The world series begins Friday for the Eagles in Appleton.
