Court says Houston sand mine may reopen

A court ruling this week in Minnesota will permit a silica sand mine in Houston County to reopen, if the owners choose to operate it again. The court of appeals overruled the DNR, which had blocked mining at the Erickson mine in Houston.

Rick Frank, environmental service director for Houston County, says the mine is considered small, because it would only produce up to 10-thousand cubic yards a year. The court ruling has no effect on other projects in Houston County, where the county board rejected a sand mining ban in March and allowed a moratorium to expire.
