Wisconsin program serves 2,000 locally

The Wisconsin WIC (Women, Infants and Children) Program is trading in paper food vouchers for an electronic card, similar to a debit card.

For 40 years, families have used paper checks to purchase foods from the WIC. Jennifer Miller with the program, told WIZM the change is being called eWIC. The electronic system arrived in La Crosse County June 10 and will be rolled out statewide by October.

Along with eWIC being as easy to use as a debit card vs. writing a check, it will also allow participants to purchase only the foods they need, instead of trying to buy everything at once, trying to save checks.

WIC serves 2,000 locally and 100,000 statewide. For more information, go to the WIC website.
