Some resistance to the idea of raising the La Crosse mayor’s pay by thousands of dollars. City council member James Cherf is among those who won’t support increasing pay for the position from about $77 thousand to $85 thousand.

Cherf says the rationale that you need to bump the pay to attract the best and the brightest candidates is faulty. If you extend that argument, he says, then you could also argue that city council pay needs to be increased again to attract better candidates.

The increase in pay would only go into effect after the next mayoral election. It would be the second ten percent raise for the position in the last ten years.  The full city council votes on the pay increase next Thursday after a key committee approved the bump this week.
