Fundraising campaign ongoing, unveiling next summer

People living on La Crosse’s south side are familiar with Weigent Park along Cass St.

But if they’re not old enough, they might not know much about Babe Weigent, the man. That’s one reason a statue is being built to honor the former Central High School football coach and teacher in the park bearing his name.

Carl Miller is active in the fundraising campaign for the statue, and he coached along with Weigent a few decades ago.

Miller said organizers have raised about $60,000 of the $80,000 needed to create the Weigent statue.  The unveiling is planned during an all-school reunion for Central graduates in July, 2017.
