Amish could get waivers for certain building codes
Amish buildings have no electrical or plumbing
No plumbing, no electrical, no problem.
A new process in Wisconsin allows the Amish to get waivers for certain building codes pertaining to carbon monoxide and smoke detectors, as well as electrical and plumbing. It’s finally giving the Amish relief from the building codes by which everyone else still has to abide.
David Mortimer is with the Eau Claire, Wis., chapter of the National Committee for Amish Religious Freedom. He says when newly married couples build a home in the Amish faith, they get to the point of getting a building permit and then realize it’s nothing they can agree to because of that faith and the adherence to a system that doesn’t allow modern amenities, like indoor plumbing.
A state office, just this week, sent a form to counties that spells out exactly how the new religious building code exemptions are to work.
