La Crosse school’s welcome back takes serious tone

Murder last week redirected focus of event

A recent murder in the city toned down the La Crosse School district’s welcome back. 

In years past, the welcome was full of skits and humor. Superintendent Randy Nelson said he scrapped this year’s plans, however, to center more around the community coming together, after Central High School student, George Miller, was gunned down last week.

He asked 40 community leaders on stage to tell the 1,000 staff, they are loved and the city and district are strong.

Nelson says he hopes the message was clear, that, no matter what happens in this community, there are powers at work to continue to make sure the community stays strong.
