Search for new attorney could delay Thursday’s hearing

Deshawn Randall wants a new lawyer to represent him for murder.

The 18-year-old who’s accused of shooting 17-year-old George Miller on La Crosse’s south side, told a judge Tuesday that he fired his public defender, Allan Beatty.

La Crosse County District Attorney, Tim Gruenke, says it’s not uncommon for a defendant in a murder case to switch lawyers early, without giving a specific reason. The public defender’s office will appoint a new lawyer for Randall, who’s jailed on $1 million bond.

Gruenke says Randall’s preliminary hearing, scheduled for Thursday, might be delayed because of the search for a new defender.
