Firefighters evacuate homes, after gas line break

People were displaced, school was on lockdown around an hour

A ‘shelter in place’ order at Hintgen School in La Crosse has been lifted, after a gas main break this morning.

Nearly a dozen houses near 28th and Birch streets were evacuated by firefighters, after crews digging struck the two-inch gas line, around 8 a.m.

Xcel Energy shut off the gas shortly before 9 a.m. and is investigating how the break occurred.
