La Crosse Promise getting big help for homes
Local banks have set aside millions in the house-for-scholarship program
Almost a dozen La Crosse area lenders are joining together to help the La Crosse Promise.
Those banks and credit unions are setting aside $8 million in loan assistance to help families that want to build new homes or buy old ones in two city neighborhoods.
Families signing up for the Promise program can qualify for breaks on mortgage loans from participating banks. A family will have to stay in the house at least four years for the kids to qualify for scholarship funds of up to $50,000. There are several lots available right now, priced anywhere from $5,000-7,000.
