La Crosse board makes plan for two senior centers
Two groups offered five-year leases
on centers, then sold for $1
The city of La Crosse finally has arrived at plan for the future of two senior centers.
Monday, the board of public works agreed to a plan to give the groups operating the centers five-year leases. At the end of those leases, the idea is to offer the two buildings for sale to the groups for a dollar each.
If they say no, then the buildings will be sold as city surplus.
For years, city hall has been indecisive about the two centers, which can cost thousands of taxpayer dollars per year to maintain and, critics say, often cater to seniors who don’t live in the city.
Supporters of the centers say they’re essential for keeping some elderly engaged with others in the community.
