Mayor not happy with Oktoberfest mayhem
Wants to create safer environment near campuses
As long as there’s Oktoberfest in La Crosse, there will be going to be drunken shenanigans in the city.
No exception this year, says mayor Tim Kabat, who’s not at ease with the amount of mayhem around the city’s college campuses
during the fest, although this year lacked spectacular crimes,
virtual riots or tragic deaths, making it seem slightly improved.
Still, says Kabat, more needs to be done to create a safer environment in that area. He also wants to explore ways to
improve West Avenue traffic near the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse during the fest.
At times, students and others, virtually shut down the street by crossing at will and loitering in lanes of traffic.
Kabat believes the city’s response to the near-riotous campus area will be altered a bit for next year’s fest but will likely include yet more police enforcement.
