Heritage board took suggestions, final vote lies with park board

The last remaining symbol of La Crosse’s Myrick Park Zoo could get a makeover soon.

The city parks and rec department told members of the local heritage preservation board that there are no plans to get rid of the old duck house, despite some concerns from the public.

Jay Odegaard from park and rec says repairs could be made, and a plaque about the stone house may be placed at the site.

The heritage board took suggestions from speakers last night, but the final decision on what happens to the house lies with the park board.

Earlier this week, there was public concern that parks and rec director Steve Carlyon was going to demolish the structure, but he was actually just putting out feelers to see how to best repair or restore the duck house.

Carlyon said he made a promise several years ago that the fixture of the former zoo’s bird exhibit would remain in the park and he intends to keep that promise.
