Atheist group from Madison started
ordeal when it called for the symbols removal

LA CRESCENT, Minn. – La Crescent has a decision to make about the future of a large cross and star posted on city property.

It seems a majority of area residents want the city to oppose a call for the symbols to be removed from government land.

But one of the leading opponents of the display, Hank Zumach, believes area churches won’t be able to agree on a solution, because they don’t agree on much of anything.

Zumach claims the Lions Club, which erected the star and cross, would break its own rules if it were to get involved in the political and religious dispute.

The entire ordeal started weeks ago when an atheist group from Madison called for the symbols to be removed. Tuesday the town had a meeting on the matter. Those in favor of keeping the star and cross where they are outnumbered those opposed by about 4-to-1.

The next chance the council would have to discuss the issue is at a regular meeting in two weeks.
