Old Myrick zoo duck house not going anywhere

Reports that city was demolishing structure were misconstrued

There is not much left of the old zoo from La Crosse’s Myrick Park.

So, when a report this week suggested park and rec director Steve Carlyon was looking at getting rid of the old duck house from the zoo, there were immediate objections.

But demolishing the structure was never his intent, Carlyon said.

He’s just looking for guidance on how best to repair or restore the strange old structure.

“It’s going to be there,” Carylon said. “We just want to know how we can get it back open.”

Carlyon says he made a promise several years ago that the fixture of the former zoo’s bird exhibit would remain in the park; he intends to keep that promise.

The city’s Historic Preservation Commission considers the significance of the duck house at a meeting tonight.
