Onalaska project receives award, despite not being bulit yet

The Onalaska Great River Landing project has received an award, despite the fact that it hasn’t even been built, yet.

The award comes from the Wisconsin Chapter of the American Planning Association, and was given last weekend based more along the lines of planning.

Onalaska Land Use and Development Director Brea Grace said the award was given using the criteria of originality, innovation, transferability, increased understanding of planning, role of planners and effectiveness of results.

Grace said using the charrette design process for the project allowed them to achieve true collaboration giving the city, citizens and area businesses ownership of the project. 

Thirty percent of the design plans for the first phase have been completed.

The Onalaska common council will now review the funding strategy for Phase 1 and proceed with the final design.
