No winning for La Crosse county staff in office switch

Old office has asbestos, new office has asbestos

From one problem to, well, the same problem. The La Crosse county staff just can’t win.

Another concern about asbestos is complicating the plans for La Crosse County staff to move into the Associated Bank building on State Street.

The planning committee for the new administrative center has been told by architect Val Schute that some asbestos exists in basement floor tiles in the old bank, which opened as First Federal in 1960.

Part of the reason why the county is moving out of the former courthouse is because a major asbestos removal project may be needed there soon.

Schute says those tiles are covered by carpet and some walls were installed on top of the carpet, so portions of the basement walls would have to be taken out to get to the asbestos.
