Treasurer says thanks for eliminating job

Position is stripped of most duties

Not often do you hear someone give thanks when you try to eliminate his job.

That, however, is exactly what lawmakers in Madison heard from state treasurer Matt Adamczyk this week, after the state assembly voted yes on a constitutional amendment to eliminate the office.

Eliminating the office is what Adamczyk campaigned on when he was running for treasurer.

“The office has been stripped of its duties and it’s down to, basically, nothing left,” Adamczyk said. “And to keep the office around forever just makes no sense.”

The constitutional amendment has to pass in two consecutive legislative sessions in order for the measure to wind up on a ballot in front of voters.

A separate measure would also eliminate the office of the Secretary of State.
