Raze/repair order lifted on old Bakalars building

Bakalars close to selling to Metroplains

There will be some closure today on a historic building damaged by a tornado in La Crosse four years ago. 

The city’s board of public works has removed a raze or repair order on the old Bakalars sausage factory on South Avenue. 

The building has been under the order since a tornado swept through the city in 2011. 

Public works director Dale Hexom says board action is really just a formality to “close the loop” on the status of the building in relation to the raze or repair order. 

The building is close to being sold by Bakalars to the Metroplains development company.
