City council split three ways on giving mayor raise
La Crosse Mayor Kabat makes $77,200 now
A divided La Crosse city council committee Tuesday night agreed to increase the pay for the next mayor. 
Some council members just want to get some kind of raise on the books before the next election. Others say the current proposal is far too modest. And still, a very small minority think the next mayor shouldn’t get any kind of raise at all.
City council member Martin Gaul, who introduced the newest proposal, wants pay for the position to increase as it does for any city employee.
“The mayor is entitled to the same increase,” Gaul said, “and entitled to no more and no less than any other employee.”
Gaul’s proposed increase, in fact, mirrors the raise that city employees will see in the coming year.
The next mayor would receive 1.2-percent increase per year from 2013 until the next election.
Next week, the full council will vote on increasing pay for the mayor to $79,500. Current mayor Tim Kabat makes $77,200 now.
Kabat vetoed the last proposal to increase the job’s pay.
