Company close to renovating old Bakalars factory using historic tax credits
Building has sat unused
since tornado ravaged La Crosse in 2011
A plan for turning an old factory into loft apartments next to Gundersen Health System in La Crosse takes some more steps forward this week.
The development company, Metroplains, plans to turn the old Bakalars sausage factory into 25 apartments with the help of historic building rehabilitation tax credits.
The company plans on maintaining the historic integrity of the outside of the building, even while updating it on the inside to make it more energy efficient.
The former factory was severely damaged by the tornado that whipped through the city in 2011 and has essentially sat unused since.
The Bakalars Company has since relocated to a new facility in the city’s northside industrial park. The plan has received approvals from two key city committees this week.
