Lions Club had offered to buy land where symbols rest

LA CRESCENT, Minn. – One month after a crowded public hearing on religious symbols in La Crescent, the controversy could be settled soon, behind the scenes.

An attempt by the Lions Club to buy the public land where a lighted cross and star are located now is on hold, as the club ponders a new offer to move the symbols out of the city completely.

Dewey Severson of the Lions Club says nothing firm has been decided yet, but he’s heard lots of community support for keeping the star and cross display where it is.

The controversy started when a Madison, Wis., group called Freedom From Religion called on the city to take down the cross and star on public land, claiming they violate the separation of church and state.
