One could argue that a southside community center in La Crosse might never have been built without the relentless push by former city council member, Bernie Maney.

Now, the council will consider naming the center after Maney, who died late last month at 87.

Maney served on the city council for nearly 30 years in two different stints. He was instrumental in getting the neighborhood center built before retiring from the council just a few years ago.

Built in 2002, the center is currently known as the Powell-Poage-Hamilton Neighborhood center.
