Atheist group complained religious
symbols shouldn’t be on public land

LA CRESCENT, Minn. – It’s a solution that doesn’t please everybody, but it probably will end the four-month debate over the star and cross display in La Crescent.

The city council there has given the OK to a plan by the Lions Club to relocate the lighted symbols onto private property after this holiday season.

Thousands of people signed a petition to leave the cross and star on public land, after a protest was lodged by an atheist group out of Madison, Wis. After the vote, the council heard citizen comments that the city government should have stood its ground and rejected the Freedom from Religion Foundation’s complaint.

The star will be lit on Friday, and remain lighted into early January.
