Smoking in car with kids could be illegal
Proposal could lead to
smoking ban with kids in your home
In the future, you could get ticketed for smoking in the car with your kids.
That’s the proposal from Wisconsin democratic state rep. Beth Meyers, who intends the proposal as a way to make a point to parents about the health risks of smoking around their kids.
“We wanted to have one more way to help parents think about smoking in a vehicle with their child,” Meyers said, “and we think this is something where they may say, ‘Wait, we can’t smoke, we have a child in a car seat.'”
Meyers says she doesn’t intend for the anti-smoking measure to be a primary enforcement law for police. In other words, police couldn’t pull you over for smoking with a kid in the car, but they could ticket you for smoking if they stop you for something else.
Meyers also did not deny that, if successful, this bill may lead to mandates to stop smoking in homes with children, as well.
