La Crosse to recylce nearly 9,000 mattresses landfill sees a year

City will now charge fee for recycle program

Almost 9,000 used mattresses get sent to the La Crosse County landfill in a typical year, but from now on, most of them probably won’t be buried.

Starting in 2016, the county will send most of the mattresses to a recycler with a new fee charged to help pay for the removal of springs and other parts.

The permanent recycling policy follows a recent trial program, in which the county delivered hundreds of mattresses to 7 Rivers Recycling in Onalaska, Wis.

A native of Prairie du Chien, Brad graduated from UW - La Crosse and has worked in radio news for more than 30 years, mostly in the La Crosse area.
