La Crosse to recylce nearly 9,000 mattresses landfill sees a year
City will now charge fee for recycle program
Almost 9,000 used mattresses get sent to the La Crosse County landfill in a typical year, but from now on, most of them probably won’t be buried.
Starting in 2016, the county will send most of the mattresses to a recycler with a new fee charged to help pay for the removal of springs and other parts.
The permanent recycling policy follows a recent trial program, in which the county delivered hundreds of mattresses to 7 Rivers Recycling in Onalaska, Wis.
