Mayor happy with city’s Human Rights Commission goals
Group tackling goal to end
discrimination in La Crosse
One group in La Crosse is taking seriously an apparent American responsibility.
It’s what president Obama mentioned in his Sunday speech on terror: The responsibility of all Americans to reject discrimination.
La Crosse mayor Tim Kabat likes that his Human Rights Commission has been steadily working towards that goal, “just to be more respectful of our modern times and having accommodations for all people and for being welcoming and accepting,” Kabat said.
This fall, the Human Rights Commission tackled issues of discrimination among blacks and in the LGBTQ communities. More are planned for other groups though nothing has been scheduled just yet.
But it will be, says Kabat. It’s part of the mandate in the ordinance that created the Human Rights Commission, and there’s plenty of work to do to end discrimination in the city.
“And these aren’t just simple solutions either,” Kabat said. “You can’t just wave a magic wand and, all of a sudden, all of the discrimination out of the city is gone. It’s going to take many, many years and many, many people talking about solutions.”
