Former Effigy Mounds head accused of stealing ancient bones

For more than 20 years, he was in charge of a northeast Iowa park that included Indian burial mounds shaped like animals.

Former Effigy Mounds superintendent Thomas Munson is now charged in federal court with stealing ancient bones from that park over a 20-year period.

Munson was charged with embezzlement this week in a Cedar Rapids, Iowa, court.

Many Native American bones are displayed in a museum at Effigy Mounds, near Marquette, Wis. Munson is accused of taking many of those bones, and storing them in his garage in Prairie du Chien, Wis.

A native of Prairie du Chien, Brad graduated from UW - La Crosse and has worked in radio news for more than 30 years, mostly in the La Crosse area. He regularly covers local courts and city and county government. Brad produces the features "Yesterday in La Crosse" and "What's Buried on Brad's Desk." He also writes the website "Triviazoids," which finds odd connections between events that happen on a certain date, and he writes and performs with the local comedy group Heart of La Crosse. Brad been featured on several national TV programs because of his memory skills.
