Sales taxes to increase in La Crosse?
Lawmakers considering
increase to pay for roads
A sales-tax increase could be on the way for those who do their shopping in La Crosse County.
State lawmakers are considering a bill that would allow counties to ask voters in a referendum on raising sales taxes by half a percent to pay for road maintenance only.
If approved, the tax would sunset after four years. County board supervisors have been wrestling with backlogged road-maintenance needs that are said to be in the $40-60 million range, and have recently considered a wheel tax to pay for those repairs.
The money from the sales tax would also be distributed to towns, villages and cities within the county.
