Traffic death toll in county is low, but number seems random

Many drivers in the La Crosse area apparently conceded Monday night to Old Man Winter, and stayed home instead of risking travel during the season’s first big storm.

Reduced traffic in bad weather could help keep La Crosse County’s highway death toll under five for the first time since 2008.

Captain Mike Horstman from the county sheriff’s department says it’s hard to stay consistently low in traffic deaths. For example, 17 people died in La Crosse County crashes in 2011.

Vernon, Trempealeau, Crawford and Jackson counties will all finished the year with higher traffic tolls than in 2014. Richland County, however, has had no highway deaths in 2015, after recording seven a year ago.
